Keeping cool with the door open

An open door says "come in" — and lets your cooled air walk out. Here's how Village businesses can have both.

The quickest way in

Air movement at an open shop door A shop interior with an open door on the right. Cool indoor air spills out low through the doorway while warm outdoor air comes in high. An air curtain above the door blows a sheet of air downward to slow the exchange. Shop warm air in cool air out, low air curtain
  • Cool air sinks

Cold air slides out along the floor while warm air rolls in at the top.

  • Wind makes it worse

A sea breeze pushes straight in, and the unit runs flat out all afternoon.

  • Entry gets the blame

Call and tell us what the building is doing. We will say what we would measure, what it is likely to be, and when we could come out. Carlsbad and the area around it.

Options, cheapest first

  • Thermostat setup — sensible setpoints and a schedule, sensor away from the door
  • Door closer or partial opening — a door ajar still says "open"
  • Air curtain — a fan above the door that slows the air swap
  • Entry zone — a small ductless unit for the counter by the door
  • Right-sized system — if the unit can never catch up, check its capacity
